Quail Cage Blueprint
The Ultimate Three-Tier Quail Cage System for Healthy, Productive Birds
Whether you're a backyard enthusiast, a serious breeder, or a commercial egg producer, the quality of your housing has a direct impact on the health, welfare, and productivity of your quail. At WellNest Quail, we've spent considerable time designing a cage system that goes beyond the minimum requirements. Our philosophy is simple: healthy birds produce better eggs, live longer, and are easier to manage. Our three-tier quail cage system has been carefully engineered to provide generous space, excellent ventilation, effortless maintenance, and efficient egg collection—all while making the daily management of your flock as simple as possible.
9 Quail Cages in each system

Designed Around Bird Welfare
Many commercially available quail cages are built to maximise the number of birds that can be housed in a given area. While this may reduce initial costs, it often results in overcrowding, increased stress, feather pecking, poorer egg production, and more difficult maintenance. Our design takes a different approach. Each cage provides:
- 300 mm of clear internal headroom
- Generous floor space
- Excellent airflow from all sides
- Easy access for inspection and maintenance
- Comfortable accommodation for six adult quail
Comfortable Headroom Makes a Difference
One of the most noticeable features of our design is the 300 mm internal headroom. Many quail cages are built with much lower roofs to save material costs or increase bird density. While quail do not require excessive height, providing additional headroom offers several practical benefits:
- Birds can stand naturally.
- Less stress during feeding.
- Reduced feather damage.
- Improved air circulation around the birds.
- Easier visual inspection.
- Better access during cleaning or handling.
Generous Floor Space
We deliberately designed the cages with more floor space than many commercial alternatives. Benefits include:
- Reduced competition between birds
- Less aggressive behaviour
- Lower stress levels
- Better feather condition
- Cleaner plumage
- More comfortable movement
- Reduced risk of injury
- Improved overall welfare
Angled Egg Roll-Off Floor
Our cage incorporates a slightly angled welded wire floor. This is the walking surface used by the birds. When a hen lays an egg, gravity gently rolls the egg toward the front collection lip where it remains safely accessible for collection. This simple design offers numerous advantages:
- Cleaner eggs
- Less egg breakage
- Reduced contamination
- Faster collection
- Less disturbance to the birds
- Improved hygiene
- Higher-quality table and hatching eggs
Easy-Clean Waste Tray
Directly beneath each cage is a removable galvanized waste tray. Droppings fall through the mesh floor into the tray below rather than accumulating inside the cage. Advantages include:
- Quick daily cleaning
- Better hygiene
- Reduced ammonia build-up
- Lower odours
- Fewer flies
- Improved bird health
- Longer-lasting cage components
Effective Ventilation
Fresh air is essential for healthy quail. Our design uses welded wire mesh on the:
- Front
- Sides
- Rear
- Excess moisture
- Respiratory problems
- Ammonia build-up
- Heat stress during warm weather
External Feed Trough
Feeders are positioned outside the cage. This provides several benefits:
- Easy refilling
- Less feed wastage
- Cleaner feed
- Less contamination
- No need to open the cage during feeding
- Reduced stress for the birds
Uninterrupted Water Supply
The system is designed to accommodate an external PVC water line fitted with nipple drinkers. Benefits include:
- Fresh water available at all times
- Cleaner drinking water
- Reduced contamination
- Lower maintenance
- Easy expansion
- Simple plumbing
Convenient Modular Construction
Each system is completely modular. Whether you need one unit or one hundred, additional systems can simply be positioned alongside existing rows. This makes the design ideal for:
- Backyard poultry keepers
- Small farms
- Commercial egg producers
- Breeding operations
- Educational facilities
Built for Long-Term Use
The cage has been designed around durable, commonly available materials including:
- Treated timber
- Galvanized welded mesh
- Galvanized sheet steel trays
- Stainless or galvanized hardware
- PVC water system
Why this design works
Our aim was not simply to build another quail cage. We wanted to create a housing system that puts bird welfare first while also making life easier for the keeper. The result is a cage that offers:
- Spacious accommodation
- Better airflow
- Cleaner eggs
- Easier egg collection
- Fast daily cleaning
- Reduced labour
- Lower disease risk
- Excellent visibility
- Efficient feeding and watering
- Modular expansion
- Durable construction
- Attractive appearance
- High productivity
- Comfortable working conditions
